Many people think that concrete and cement are the same thing however this is not correct. Concrete and cement are two different products.

Here we look at the differences between the two and why they are not the same.

Cement is not really used on its on and is in fact an ingredient in concrete.

What is concrete?

  • Concrete is a mixture which is made up from aggregate, water, and cement.
  • Concrete is the most popular, widely used material in the construction industry in both residential and commercial settings.
  • Concrete is widely available, and it is very strong and durable making it the perfect building material for most projects.
  • Concrete is made up of aggregates including stone, gravel, and sand.

The water that is used to make concrete should be clean water along with the aggregates being clean to ensure the concrete mixed is to the highest possible strength.

What is cement?

  • Cement is a binder ingredient, and it is made up from a mixture of silicon, calcium,
aluminium, and iron and sometimes limestone substances. The ingredients are heated and the
ground to a fine powder which is commonly known as cement.
  • Cement is then mixed with water and in turn forms concrete.
  • Cement was invented in the 19 th century by an English bricklayer. It can be mixed with water and
used as a grout. It can also be combined with paster and water for smooth surfaces.

Although cement can be used on its own it is mainly used as an ingredient for concrete. Concrete is
used for many projects including roads, bridges, patios, pavements and more. This is because it is
one of the strongest and long-lasting materials known.

Cement is a fantastic binding ingredient however on its own it would be very prone to cracks
therefore it is not usually used on its on for building projects.
